A memorial bench plaque is a small piece of bronze that does a big job: it tells everyone who sits down whose bench this is and why. Park departments, cemeteries, universities and homeowner associations run bench programs with their own plaque rules, and families and donors come to us because our online designer makes a plaque to the exact size the program asks for, shows the price as you type, and gives you a written proof before anything is cast.

Bench plaque sizes that parks ask for

Most public bench programs specify the plaque down to the inch, so check the program rules before you design. A few examples from program documents we have read: the Chicago Parks Foundation fits a 2 by 10 inch cast bronze plaque to each donor bench; Portland Parks and Recreation asks the donor to supply a bronze plaque 8 inches wide by 5 inches tall and 3/8 inch thick; East Bay Regional Park District in California and King County Parks in Washington use a 4 by 6 inch plaque; the Central Park Conservancy allows four lines of 30 characters. Private cemeteries and churches often use 8 by 3 or 10 by 3 inches on the back rail of a memorial bench.

Prices from our live designer for a standard rectangle with a classic border and leatherette background, shipping included. The designer accepts any size between these, so a 2 by 10 or a 6 by 4 is typed in just as easily.

How many words fit

Raised bronze lettering needs a little room to stay legible, so plan on about 25 to 30 characters per line at a quarter inch letter height, which is what most program rules assume. A 10 by 3 inch plaque reads best with two or three lines: a name, the dates, and a short line such as Forever in our hearts or Sit a while and remember. A 4 by 6 inch plaque in portrait holds four or five short lines. The proof shows the plaque at scale, so you can see the letter height before you approve it.

  • In Loving Memory of Margaret Ann Harris, 1944 to 2025, Who loved this park
  • Dedicated to Coach Bill Romero, Forty years on this field
  • For Dad, who always sat here, James T. Walker, 1951 to 2024
  • In honor of the volunteers of Riverside Trail, 2026

Some programs do not allow birth and death dates, logos or quotations, so read the rules before you write. Our guide on what a bronze memorial plaque should say has more wording ideas.

Fixing the plaque to the bench

  • Wooden slats and rails: screws visible from the front with bronze rosettes, through a pre drilled slat, is the simplest and the easiest for park staff to remove and refit.
  • Metal and recycled plastic benches: lugs with studs through drilled holes with nuts behind, or a flat back plaque bonded with an outdoor structural adhesive where drilling is not allowed.
  • Concrete plinths and stone benches: concealed studs set in epoxy. Some programs, such as Portland’s, set the plaque in concrete at the base of the bench rather than on the bench itself.

Choose the fastening in the designer and the plaque ships with a drilling template. If the program installs the plaque for you, order it with the fastening its rules specify and ship it to the address on the program form.

Timing it for a dedication

Public programs usually take weeks after the donation to confirm the bench, and the Central Park Conservancy, for example, allows eight to nine weeks for its plaque after the proof is approved. Our own lead time is 3 to 4 weeks for casting after proof approval, plus delivery. If a dedication date is fixed, order as soon as the program has confirmed the plaque size and wording, and tell us the date so we can flag any risk before casting.

Why cast bronze for a bench

A bench plaque is touched, sat against, rained on and mowed around. Cast bronze with raised lettering survives all of that: it does not rust, the lettering cannot wear off because it is part of the metal, and the plaque darkens evenly to a warm brown while the letters stay bright. Thin engraved plates and plastic plaques fade and crack within a few seasons, which is why nearly every park program specifies bronze.
