A commemorative plaque marks a moment worth keeping: the day a building opened, a hundredth anniversary, a championship season, a retirement after forty years, a life that shaped a town. Cast in solid bronze with raised lettering, it will still be readable long after the people who unveiled it are gone. Companies, schools, churches, clubs, cities and families design commemorative bronze plaques in our online tool, where the price shows as you work and a written proof is checked before anything is cast.

What people commemorate in bronze

Almost any occasion that deserves to be remembered in public ends up on a bronze plaque. The most common orders we see from across the USA:

  • Anniversaries and milestones: a company’s 50th or 100th year, a church or school centennial, a town’s founding date.
  • Openings and dedications: a new wing, park, bridge, library or sports field, usually with the date and the names of those who made it happen. Our building dedication plaques page covers the formal version with architect and contractor names.
  • Achievements: championship teams, hall of fame inductees, record holders, employees of the year, long service awards.
  • People and events: a founder, a long serving mayor or pastor, a volunteer, a tragedy or a victory the community wants its children to know about.
  • Gifts and sponsorships: a bench, tree, scoreboard or room given in someone’s name. Donor recognition plaques cover walls of many names.
  • Family occasions: a golden wedding anniversary, a new home, a family reunion, a plaque set into the garden of the house a grandfather built.

Sizes and prices for commemorative plaques

Commemorative plaques are usually read from standing height on a wall, a pedestal or a stone, so they tend to be a little larger than a grave plaque. The sizes below are priced in our live designer for a standard rectangle with a classic border and leatherette background, shipping included.

Prices update as you change the size, border, background and fastening. Oval and circular plaques are available at the same sizes. Larger panels, such as 24 by 36 inches for a monument face, are quoted on request. Our bronze plaque sizes guide explains how many words each size holds.

Getting the wording right

Commemorative wording works best when it answers four questions in order: what happened, when, who was involved, and why it matters. A typical layout puts a heading line in larger capitals, the date beneath it, then two to five lines of plain statement, and finishes with the name of the body that placed the plaque. Some examples of the shape:

  • THIS BUILDING WAS OPENED ON MAY 14, 2026 BY MAYOR ELENA RUIZ TO SERVE THE PEOPLE OF HARRISON COUNTY
  • CELEBRATING 100 YEARS, FIRST METHODIST CHURCH OF GREENVILLE, 1926 TO 2026, FAITHFUL THROUGH EVERY SEASON
  • STATE CHAMPIONS 2025, LINCOLN HIGH SCHOOL VARSITY BASEBALL, PRESENTED BY THE BOOSTER CLUB
  • IN GRATEFUL RECOGNITION OF DR. SAMUEL OKAFOR, CHIEF OF SURGERY 1989 TO 2024, WHOSE CARE TOUCHED THREE GENERATIONS
  • THIS OAK WAS PLANTED ON ARBOR DAY 2026 BY THE STUDENTS OF MAPLE GROVE ELEMENTARY

Keep names spelled exactly as the people want them, agree the date format before you design (May 14, 2026 and 14 May 2026 both read well, but pick one), and avoid abbreviations that will puzzle a reader in fifty years. Bronze is best read at a glance, so one clear sentence beats a paragraph. Our memorial plaque wording guide has more examples, including phrases for people rather than events.

Logos, emblems, seals and borders

A commemorative plaque often carries the mark of the organization behind it. In the designer you can upload a logo or seal as a raised bronze element, choose from a library of emblems that includes military, service club, religious and sporting symbols, and pick a border from plain to ornate. A logo at the top left or centered above the heading is the classic arrangement; two logos, one in each top corner, works for a partnership or a joint anniversary. Background textures, leatherette, pebble or a smooth dark oxidized finish, change the character of the plaque without changing the price much. A full color photograph can also be added for a founder’s portrait or a picture of the original building; see our bronze plaques with photo page.

Mounting a commemorative plaque

  • Brick, block and stone walls: concealed lugs with threaded studs set in epoxy into drilled holes give a clean face with no visible fixings. This is the usual choice for lobbies and exterior walls.
  • Boulders and pedestals: studs into drilled holes, or a flat back plaque bonded to a dressed face. A slight forward lean on the pedestal makes the plaque easier to read.
  • Timber, drywall and panels: screws visible from the front with bronze rosettes, which also allow the plaque to be moved if the building changes.

Choose the fastening in the designer and the plaque ships with a drilling template. If the plaque will be unveiled at a ceremony, order it with the fastening the installer prefers and allow for the lead time below.

Why cast bronze for a commemorative plaque

A commemorative plaque is a promise that something will be remembered, and the material has to keep that promise. Cast bronze with raised lettering does not rust, does not fade in sun, and cannot lose its lettering because the letters are part of the metal. Left alone it darkens to a warm brown and the raised letters stay bright where they are touched and polished; a protective lacquer keeps the as new finish if you prefer it. Thin engraved plates, aluminum and plastic plaques look fine on the day and tired within a few years, which is why the plaques you see on century old buildings are nearly always bronze.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a commemorative plaque cost?

In our designer a 10 by 8 inch cast bronze plaque is $711.58, a 12 by 8 is $796.86 and a 16 by 12 is $1,264.58, shipping included. Smaller plaques start at $382.98. The price updates as you change size, border, background and fastening.

What should a commemorative plaque say?

Say what happened, when, who was involved and, if there is room, why it matters. Put the heading in larger capitals, the date beneath, two to five lines of statement and the name of the organization placing the plaque. Agree spellings and a date format before you design.

Can I put our logo on the plaque?

Yes. Upload the logo or seal in the designer and it is cast as a raised bronze element. You can also choose an emblem from the built in library or add a full color photograph.

What size should a commemorative plaque be?

For a wall beside a doorway, 12 by 8 inches is the most common. Plaques in a lobby or on a pedestal are often 16 by 12 or 18 by 12, and a plaque with a paragraph of history needs 22 by 15. Sizes above that are quoted on request.

How long does it take?

Allow about 3 to 4 weeks for casting after you approve the free proof, plus 5 to 10 days for delivery anywhere in the USA and worldwide.
