A bronze historical marker tells the story of a place in a way that lasts longer than the people who put it there. Historical societies, towns, historic district homeowners and businesses in landmark buildings use them to record a date of construction, an event, or a listing on a historic register. Every marker we make is cast in solid bronze with raised lettering, designed online by you with the price shown as you type, and checked on a written proof before casting.

Types of historical plaques
- Historic home plaques, usually small, with the year the house was built and the name of the first owner, for a historic district or a preservation society programme
- Register plaques recording a listing on a national, state or local historic register, with the wording the listing body requires
- Site and event markers on a wall, a boulder or a post, with a paragraph of text about what happened here
- Building history plaques for hotels, banks, theatres and churches, often with the architect’s name and the date of completion
- Trail and park markers that explain a landscape, a battlefield or an industrial site
Sizes and how much text fits
Bronze is priced by area, so the text decides the size. A historic home plaque with three or four short lines sits well on 8 x 6 or 10 x 8 inches. A register plaque with a title and a sentence or two is usually 12 x 8 to 16 x 12. A marker with a full paragraph, the kind people stop and read, needs our largest designer size, 22 x 15 inches, with the body text at a smaller letter height than the title. Our designer accepts any size up to 22 1/16 x 15 3/4 inches and shows the price as you change it; for a larger double sided roadside marker, contact us for a quote.
| Size (inches) | Typical marker | Designer price, standard rectangle |

Wording a historical marker
Lead with a short title in capitals, such as the name of the building or the event. Follow with the facts in plain sentences: who, what, when and why it matters. Put the sponsor or the society that erected the marker, and the year, in a smaller line at the foot. If the marker records a register listing, use the exact wording the listing body publishes for its plaques, and check whether it requires a particular emblem or seal, which can be cast in relief on the plaque.
Keep the paragraph to what a visitor will read standing up: around 60 to 90 words on a 16 x 12 inch marker and up to about 150 words on a 22 x 15. The proof shows the plaque at scale, so you can judge the letter height before casting.
Mounting on a wall, a boulder or a post
- Masonry walls: lugs with studs, concealed, set in epoxy or anchors. The face shows only the lettering.
- Boulders and stone: the same concealed studs, set into drilled holes with epoxy; a template ships with the plaque.
- Timber: screws visible from the front, with bronze rosettes.
- Posts: a flat back plaque fixed to a post or a bracket supplied by your sign installer or the park department.
Bronze does not rust and needs no paint. Outdoors it develops a darker brown tone over the years while the raised lettering stays bright where it is touched or wiped, which is the look most people want on a marker.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a bronze historical marker cost?
In our designer an 8 x 6 inch historic home plaque is $540.98, a 12 x 8 register plaque is $796.86 and a 22 x 15 narrative marker is $1,908.50, shipping included, at prices taken on August 31, 2026. The price changes on screen as you alter the size, border and emblems.
Can you make a marker with the wording a historic register requires?
Yes. Type the required wording into the designer exactly as the listing body publishes it, and upload its emblem if one is required. The written proof lets the society or the register office check the text before casting.
What is the largest marker you make?
The online designer prices plaques up to 22 1/16 x 15 3/4 inches. For a larger marker, a double sided roadside marker or a post mounted set, contact us with the text and we will quote it.
Will the marker turn green?
Modern cast bronze with a protective lacquer darkens slowly to brown rather than turning green. A light wipe with a soft cloth once or twice a year keeps the lettering bright. Our guide on how to clean a bronze plaque has the details.
How long does it take?
Allow about 3 to 4 weeks for casting after you approve the free proof, plus 5 to 10 days for delivery anywhere in the USA and worldwide.
