San Antonio’s private cemeteries say very little in public, while Austin’s city cemeteries have printed rules that name cast bronze outright. This page covers both: Sunset Memorial Park, Mission Park and the Catholic cemeteries including San Fernando, Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, the City of Austin’s 2024 rules and last known fees, Cook-Walden, and the Texas State Cemetery. We cast the bronze plaque and ship it to you with shipping included; the base and the setting are arranged through the cemetery office or a local monument dealer. Allow six to eight weeks from payment to delivery. Casting, hand finishing and shipping from our foundry take most of that time, and we send a free written proof before anything is cast. If your cemetery sets markers only in certain months, order early enough for its next installation window.

San Antonio cemeteries publish very little

Sunset Memorial Park on Austin Highway, a Dignity Memorial park since 1981, says only that its monuments and markers are “Crafted from granite or bronze”; it gives no flat or upright rules, no outside marker policy and no setting fee. Mission Park, serving San Antonio since 1907 with cemeteries including Mission Lockehill, Mission Retama and San Jose Burial Park, publishes no memorial information at all. The Catholic Cemeteries of the Archdiocese of San Antonio, which include San Fernando, showed only a “Coming Soon” page on October 21, 2026. The old city cemeteries, a 103 acre historic district established between 1853 and 1904, have no posted marker rules either. For every San Antonio grave, then, the office is the source: ask for the written rules, the bronze size for your section, whether the bronze must sit on granite, and the fee.

Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery and veterans in private cemeteries

Fort Sam Houston is one of 78 VA national cemeteries with sections for both upright headstones and flat markers, and its rules say no items will be attached or glued to a headstone, marker or niche cover. VA orders and sets the government marker there at no cost to the family. A private bronze is for the many San Antonio veterans buried in private cemeteries: the family can fix a VA bronze medallion to a privately purchased marker (service on or after April 6, 1917, VA Form 40-1330M), add a service emblem in our designer, or order a matching marker for a spouse, who is not entitled to a government marker in a private cemetery. See veteran bronze grave markers.

Austin’s city cemeteries: the 2024 rules

The City of Austin runs Oakwood, Oakwood Annex, Evergreen, Austin Memorial Park, Plummers and others. Its current rules (2024) say “Flush type memorials shall be made of granite marble or cast bronze installed on granite, marble or concrete base”, that “All memorials shall be installed and maintained at the expense of the owner”, and that the Superintendent approves size, craftsmanship, inscriptions and foundations. In flush sections flowers go only in approved bronze vases. The city’s Parks page says any monument “must be pre-approved” and that written approval is required before hiring contractors. A 2022 draft, not yet the rule, would allow “cast bronze of any thickness”, keep the top of a flush memorial within two inches of ground level, and cap memorials on cremains and infant spaces at “24 inches tall, ten inches wide, and 20 inches long”. If bronze may sit on concrete there, a 20 by 10 inch plaque fills that space; on a wider granite base, something nearer 18 by 8 inches is the fit.

Austin’s setting fees: FY2024 figures from search index text

Austin posts no current cemetery fee schedule; the city says to contact Cemetery Operations for it, at (512) 978-2320. The newest figures found are from the FY2024 schedule (fiscal year beginning October 1, 2023), and they come only from search index text because the PDF itself is no longer online, so treat them as a guide, not a quote.

Austin FY2024 line (search index text)Fee
Monument settings$0.80 per square inch
Inspection fee (outside contractors may be subject to it)$85.00
Corner and foot markers$17.00
Military markers$75.00
Releveling 24″x12″ flat stones$100.00

The FY2022 schedule showed .70 per square inch. If the FY2024 rate applied to a flush bronze of 24 by 12 inches (288 square inches), setting would be $230.40; ask Cemetery Operations for the current figure.

Cook-Walden and the Texas State Cemetery

Cook-Walden Capital Parks Cemetery on North IH-35 in Pflugerville is a Dignity Memorial park and publishes no marker rules or fees, so the usual request applies: written specifications and the setting or inspection fee. The Texas State Cemetery in Austin is a different case. Government Code 2165.256 limits burial there to eligible people such as former legislators and elected state officials, with some spouses and dependent children, requires the State Cemetery Committee to adopt rules regulating monuments, and has the Committee place a marble obelisk where a grave has no permanent monument. Families with a right of burial there should ask the Committee for its monument rules before ordering anything.

What we supply for San Antonio and Austin

Texas leaves the rules to each cemetery, but no Texas cemetery is obliged by statute to take a marker from an outside supplier, so get the sheet first and design to it.

We supply the bronze. Every plaque is cast in solid LG2 statuary bronze (85 percent copper, 5 percent tin, 5 percent zinc, 5 percent lead) with raised polished lettering on a textured background, a hand applied color and a clear protective coating. Cemetery markers are cast with lugs and fitted with 3/8 inch brass all thread studs, nuts and washers for bolting to a granite or concrete base; columbarium plates use 1/4 inch fittings. We publish the alloy openly and can supply a certificate of authenticity stating it, so a cemetery that has its own alloy rule can check our figures against it before you order; a few cemeteries specify a higher copper or lower lead content than LG2, and where a page knows of one it says so. The granite or concrete base and the setting are arranged through the cemetery office or a local monument dealer; we do not pour bases or install.

A 24 by 12 inch adult marker is $1,697.45 cast to order, a 20 by 12 inch marker is $1,550.78 and a 20 by 10 inch cremation or infant marker is $1,407.68, shipping included. Other Texas pages: Houston and Dallas and Fort Worth.

How to order

  1. Ask the cemetery office for its written marker rules: the size it allows for your space, the base it requires, who may set the marker and the fee. Most offices email the sheet the same day, and several states require the cemetery to keep it in print for you.
  2. Open the free design tool, pick the shape and type the width and height in inches. The price in US dollars updates as you go, shipping to any address in the continental United States included.
  3. Add the names, dates and wording, choose a border and background, and add an emblem, motif or photo if you want one. Choose lugs with studs if the plaque will be bolted to a granite or concrete base, or a flat back for adhesive mounting on a wall or niche.
  4. Save the design and order it from My Account. We send a written proof you can forward to the cemetery for approval, and nothing is cast until you approve it. Need the full 24 by 12 inch marker size? Tell us when you order; it is cast to order at the same price as the 22 1/16 by 12 inch size in the tool.

Frequently asked questions

What does Sunset Memorial Park allow?

Its page says markers are crafted from granite or bronze but gives no sizes, outside marker policy or setting fee. Ask the office on Austin Highway for its written rules.

Can I set cast bronze in an Austin city cemetery?

Yes, on a granite, marble or concrete base, under the 2024 rules. The monument must be pre-approved, and outside contractors need written approval from Cemetery Operations.

What does Austin charge to set a marker?

The last figures found are FY2024, from search index text only: $0.80 per square inch for monument settings and an $85.00 inspection fee. Austin posts no current schedule, so ask Cemetery Operations.

What size fits an Austin cremation or infant space?

The 2022 draft caps those memorials at 20 inches long and ten inches wide. A 20 by 10 inch bronze fits if it may sit on concrete; on a wider granite base allow for the border.

Can a private bronze go on a grave at Fort Sam Houston?

No. VA orders and sets the government marker, and nothing may be attached to it. Private bronze is for private cemeteries, spouses and home memorials.
