In New York City, Long Island and Westchester the answer to whether a bronze marker is allowed changes from one cemetery gate to the next. Woodlawn in the Bronx takes granite or bronze flush markers of 24 by 12 inches and sets them itself. Green-Wood in Brooklyn uses granite flat markers. Kensico caps a single flush marker at two feet by one foot. Pinelawn on Long Island is an all bronze lawn park that welcomes your own bronze maker, while Mount Ararat forbids bronze plaques outright. The Catholic systems approve every design and set or found every marker themselves. This page goes cemetery by cemetery, with the fees each one posts and the year on them, and the winter months when foundations wait. We cast the bronze and ship it anywhere in the metro area with shipping included; the foundation and setting are done by the cemetery or its approved contractor.

What New York law means for a city order

Most nonsectarian cemeteries here are not-for-profit corporations, so their foundation and setting charges must be approved by the State Cemetery Board and posted in the office and online, and the law lets them sell flush bronze markers themselves. Catholic and other religious cemeteries are outside the Division of Cemeteries and set their own rules and charges. The state framework, and the memorialization amendment that was still unadopted in August 2026, are on bronze plaques New York.

Woodlawn in the Bronx

Woodlawn’s rules (effective August 26, 2002) say: “Where flush markers only are permitted, only granite or bronze markers 24 by 12 inches in size, and flush with the ground are permitted. The thickness of the granite or of the bronze, and its base is to be at least 4 inches. Woodlawn will set all flush markers and a foundation fee will apply.” Only a sunken vase is allowed in front of the marker, none in the Parkview Section, and no double markers go in single grave sections. A plan must be approved before the order is placed, and “Foundations will not be made between the period of November 1st to April 1st, unless in the sole opinion of Woodlawn, weather permits.” The foundation fee is not posted online, so ask (718) 920-0500 for the approved figure. The 24 by 12 inch plaque, cast to order at $1,697.45, is the size Woodlawn names.

Green-Wood in Brooklyn

Green-Wood’s rules (approved December 30, 2024) require memorials “of gray, pink, or red granite”, and its flat markers are granite, including the 12 by 8 inch urn garden marker and the 2 foot by 1 foot new flat marker. Bronze appears only on its own lawn niche markers, where “Each Lawn Niche purchase includes a bronze marker” and inscription scrolls are bought through the cemetery. A private bronze grave marker is therefore not the product for Green-Wood graves. Its charges effective August 1, 2025 include individual foundations at $59.00 per cubic foot and a $125.00 permit for setting stonework or added inscriptions, and applications made between December 1 and March 1 are built after March 1.

Westchester, Kensico and Sharon Gardens

Kensico in Valhalla and Sharon Gardens, its Jewish division founded in 1953, share one rule: a single flush marker “shall not exceed 2 feet in length, 1 foot in width and 4 inches in thickness”, in “approved quality stone or standard bronze”. The cemetery builds all foundations “at the rate approved by the State Cemetery Board”, which neither posts online, and an outside contractor may work only if memorial work is “a primary activity” of its business. Read as the whole marker, the cap takes a 24 by 12 inch plaque only if no wider base is needed; on a 24 by 12 inch base the plaque shrinks to about 20 by 8 inches. Ask 914-949-0347 which applies.

Calvary and Allied, and the Diocese of Brooklyn

The Archdiocese of New York’s cemeteries, run as Calvary and Allied, include Calvary in Queens, Gate of Heaven in Hawthorne and St. Mary’s in Rye Brook. Monument companies must get written approval “for material, design, size and any inscriptions or artwork” before manufacture, every memorial must carry “some recognized Catholic symbol”, dealers need $1,000,000 liability cover, and foundation and permit fees are collected before a memorial is accepted. No bronze sizes or fees are published. The Diocese of Brooklyn (St. John, Mount St. Mary, Holy Cross and St. Charles/Resurrection in Farmingdale) reserves the right to build all foundations, says “All markers shall be set by the cemetery at a fixed charge”, requires a cross or religious bas-relief, and gives section dimensions only at purchase.

Long Island and Queens, cemetery by cemetery

Pinelawn in Farmingdale is a bronze-only lawn park, and it answers the question directly: “Yes, you are welcome to select your own bronze memorial manufacturer.” Guidelines and fees come by phone (631-249-6100); it often cannot install bronze in winter and works through spring installations in the order received. Mount Ararat in Lindenhurst is the opposite: “bronze plaques or any description” are forbidden, footstones must be 2′ x 1′ x 4″, and its 2026 footstone foundation is $489.00 cash or $506.11 by card. Cypress Hills builds all foundations, bars plaques on crypt and niche fronts, and lists a Monument Inspection Fee of $39.00 for 2026. Mount Lebanon’s 2026 foundation list shows Footstone (Up to 2 Sq. Ft.) $662.00 but says nothing about bronze, so ask first. Holy Rood’s flush specifications could not be read and Washington Memorial Park publishes no rules.

What we supply for New York City cemeteries

We supply the bronze. Every plaque is cast in solid LG2 statuary bronze (85 percent copper, 5 percent tin, 5 percent zinc, 5 percent lead) with raised polished lettering on a textured background, a hand applied color and a clear protective coating. Cemetery markers are cast with lugs and fitted with 3/8 inch brass all thread studs, nuts and washers for bolting to a granite or concrete base; columbarium plates use 1/4 inch fittings. We publish the alloy openly and can supply a certificate of authenticity stating it, so a cemetery that has its own alloy rule can check our figures against it before you order; a few cemeteries specify a higher copper or lower lead content than LG2, and where a page knows of one it says so. The granite or concrete base and the setting are arranged through the cemetery office or a local monument dealer; we do not pour bases or install.

For a Kensico grave where the bronze sits on a base, a 16 by 8 inch plaque is $978.39 in the designer, shipping included. The cemetery’s foundation and setting charges are paid to the cemetery, not to us.

How to order

  1. Ask the cemetery office for its written marker rules: the size it allows for your space, the base it requires, who may set the marker and the fee. Most offices email the sheet the same day, and several states require the cemetery to keep it in print for you.
  2. Open the free design tool, pick the shape and type the width and height in inches. The price in US dollars updates as you go, shipping to any address in the continental United States included.
  3. Add the names, dates and wording, choose a border and background, and add an emblem, motif or photo if you want one. Choose lugs with studs if the plaque will be bolted to a granite or concrete base, or a flat back for adhesive mounting on a wall or niche.
  4. Save the design and order it from My Account. We send a written proof you can forward to the cemetery for approval, and nothing is cast until you approve it. Need the full 24 by 12 inch marker size? Tell us when you order; it is cast to order at the same price as the 22 1/16 by 12 inch size in the tool.

Allow six to eight weeks from payment to delivery. Casting, hand finishing and shipping from our foundry take most of that time, and we send a free written proof before anything is cast. If your cemetery sets markers only in certain months, order early enough for its next installation window.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my own bronze maker at Pinelawn?

Yes. Pinelawn says you are welcome to select your own bronze memorial manufacturer; call it for the garden’s guidelines and fees.

Does Woodlawn let an outside dealer set a flush bronze marker?

No. Woodlawn sets all flush markers and charges a foundation fee. The marker must be 24 by 12 inches.

Can I put a bronze plaque on a Green-Wood or Mount Ararat grave?

Green-Wood’s flat markers are granite and Mount Ararat forbids bronze plaques, so no.

When are foundations built in winter?

Woodlawn builds none from November 1 to April 1 unless weather permits, and Green-Wood builds winter applications after March 1. Order by late summer.

Do Catholic cemeteries in New York City accept outside bronze?

They require written approval of the design and a religious symbol, and they build foundations or set markers themselves. Ask the office for the section’s sizes.
